Prompt: Sometimes, just for a moment, he thought that some part of her might love him the way he loved her.

I thought this was a sort of romantic image, the two of them. We actually did it with real fire, but their hands were all gelled up and you could tell, so this was added in CGI and it looks beautiful. I thought it was a nice comment on their relationship. But what I basically told [Sarah and James] was: “Play the romance. Be proud of him. Love him when you say you love him. Love her when you say she doesn’t love you. Forget about the crumbling world. For that period of time, it doesn’t exist.” It’s a cinematic trick, but it’s a necessary emotional one. — Joss Whedon (“Chosen” Commentary)

2x22 Becoming part II: Spike wanting to save the world.
7x22 Chosen: Spike saving the world.
I wish we could get the scenes from Doomed 4.11 in here because that’s probably the first time that Spike really wants to fight evil. In the second season he was concerned about himself, not the world (in terms of people). He didn’t care if Angelus killed Buffy so long as he had Drusilla and could get away from Angelus. In season four Spike wanted to help protect the world because it gave him something to do, something to fight and to kill. By this point I feel like he had grown to like more aspects of the world other than alcohol, food and sex. By the seventh season, with the soul and all, he truly wanted to save the world. I don’t believe he would have been able to save the world before here, because he was still too self-centered.

Buffy: (to the Potential Slayers) Understand his instinct, trust yours. (to Spike) Are you okay?
Spike: Fine. A couple of ribs aren’t quite set right since… I’m fine.
Buffy: Let me see.
Spike: No.
Buffy: Spike…
Spike: I’ll be okay.
Rona: That’s hot.
Molly: So we’re supposed to like make out with them or something?
